A Rational Approach to Acting from Robert Winsor Institute

How one approaches the craft of acting largely determines one's success in this profession. In other vocations, there are educational plans and curriculums along with a level of expertise one has to attain to work in a specified field. In acting, no such requirement exists. Anyone can become an actor simply by being cast in a play, movie, TV show, or a commercial. However, to become a working actor sustaining a living solely by acting jobs, one has to attain a high level of expertise.

This expertise can be obtained in a number of ways: formal schooling, acting coaches and workshops, or on the job training in small parts. It can also be obtained by exploring and discovering for oneself the skills and techniques used by highly regarded actors. Novice usually disregards these approaches in favor of less strenuous methods.

An acting career is a very challenging career option but it also offers a lot of perks to the person. It gives you money and also overall status and popularity; people start recognizing you by just your face. You get fulfillment to follow your passion and earn money too. Acting career offers a lot of opportunities for people who are ready to take risks and are ready to wait. The Robert Winsor Institute Acting Classes is one resource where a student develops his personality and overall perception of the acting world. Some feel that being attractive or handsome is all that it takes. Others believe their credentials from highly regarded schools or studying with recognized teachers will assure them entry. Another group believes certain teaching methods will make them stand out above the rest. Many feel that it is connections and whom you know that will create certain entry. Another belief is that, once you acquire professional status, get an agent, get into the unions, you will be on easy street.

Some actors assume that time spent in acting classes and on scene studies will be enough to get by. That somehow this level of knowledge and experience will suffice. However, in other vocations such as sports, music, and dance, top performers spend countless hours training alone, practicing and perfecting their skills and techniques.

All too often, young actors focus solely on gaining entry into the industry and neglect the dramatic elements of one's craft; the rudimentary elements required for professional status. This result-oriented group focuses on the destination rather than understanding the process to get there. It is a challenging journey and there are numerous skills to perfect. Surprisingly, only a small percentage believes that learning the craft of acting is required to be successful.

What is acting? What does it entail? To me, actors are an integral part of the storytelling process. In fact, to the audience, they are the storytellers, for it is through the characters they portray that the story comes to life. Therefore, any definition of acting must include the story, the audience, the performance, plus the goals the creative team envisions.

The following definition is one, which acknowledges these elements and places the focus of one's training in proper perspective. Acting is the art and science of making and implementing dramatic choices with imagination, clarity, and purpose. Choices, which support the dramatic equations, propel the story to its optimum potential, and create the desired illusion within the mind of the audience.

This definition should provoke some thought as to how an actor trains and prepares. It should raise questions. For instance, whose choices are we talking about? The actors, the characters, or other people like the writers, directors, production personnel, or maybe, even the audience. Are these choices emotional, conscious, intellectual, instinctive, technical, or maybe arbitrary?

How are these choices implemented and with what emotion, what intent? How are these choices played? Are they played natural, forced, subtle, open, hidden, etc? Acting begins with choices. It's a selection process by which actors give life to their characters and through them, tell the story.

Acting begins with choices, progresses through another world, that of being the character, and ends with the realization of the story within the mind of the audience. In between are the tools, the skills, knowledge, and techniques by which the performers enter this world and tell the story. To succeed as a professional actor, one must understand the process of making strong choices as well as the methods of implementing and perfecting them. This approach to acting assures progress to becoming an accomplished performer.
